An increase in beer sales and beer imports is being attributed to the Rugby World Cup.
Treasury's monthly economic indicators report says there was an unusually large 2.2 percent increase in retail sales for the September quarter with supermarkets and grocery stores leading the rise.
It says the increase likely reflects increased beer sales, citing a significant rise in beer imports for the four months up until October coinciding with the Rugby World Cup tournament
Beer imports from Australia were up 20 percent, those from the UK rose 50 percent, and the amount of imported beer from South Africa was up 250 percent.
